There is much momentum in Washington for a valuable democratic reformthat could put average citizens in charge of elected officials, instead of big special interests-- publicly funded campaigns. Washington Alliance chapters are supporting this effort through education and outreach. Contact us for a presentation to your group.

Cost of Winning Campaigns
Research shows those who win campaigns for statewide races
are those who raise the most money with some few exceptions. For example, here in Washington, for the 2004 elections, 90.8% of
those who had the most money won a House seat and 96.4% of those who had the
most money for their campaigns won a Senate seat. However in the two states with public
financing for campaigns the percentage is far less.In Arizona those with the most money won 75%
House seats and 63.3% Senate seats; in Maine 55% House seats and 65.7% Senate
seats.This shows that public funding
has made it possible for more candidates in AZ and ME to win a seat without
raising the most money in a race.

2007 Legislative Action
There were three sets of clean campaigns bills in the State Legislature: * A bill to create a pilot program to fund judicial races * A bill to eliminate the ban on local governments having their own public financing programs * A bill to create a comprehensive public financing system None of the Bills made it, but the hearings were very interesting! And the campaign continues at www.washclean.org.
